New TLO: The Godfather Box Meal

Whilst KFC continues to conquer the rest of the world as Paulbot has explained, here in the UK it continues to innovate. This week saw the launch of the Godfather Box meal. Disappointingly KFC.co.uk haven't yet updated their site to reflect this and I don't have a poster picture.

The box meal follows the standard pattern, for £4.99 you get chips, drink, a side, a piece of chicken and KFC's newest creation . . . The Godfather Burger. What a name, something to rival the Daddy burger you think and with that strapline 'Deserves Respect' excitement continues to grow. You are given the box, a beautiful gloss black affair with simple wording and weighty contents and then you realise this is just a 'Spicy Italian Tower Burger'

Identical in every way to a standard tower (although, and clarification to follow on this there may be a different cheese used.) the tomato ketchup has merely been replaced by what looks like a thick cream of tomato soup with herbs. Still I always like something spicy and greedily tucked in. The sauce was smooth with a slight smoky taste with hints of Basil and most disappointingly only the merest hint of the spice promised in this burgers description (remember this in an OR fillet). It appeared that I certainly had a generous helping of sauce and so I really was expecting something a little hotter.

After a while the sauce became a little creamy and cloying not providing the perfect balance of palate cleansing fresh tomato found in the ZT's spicy salsa underbelly. The one saving grace of this was where I chose to sample it, so a special mention must go out to Congleton branch where I enjoyed it, which in over 20 visits this year has provided excellent quality fayre each and every time. Congleton tried as hard as they could, plenty of fresh lettuce an ample but overwhelming portion of Mayo, crispy hash brown, hot fresh fillet and a perfect soft bun, all of which couldn't quite salvage what could have been a great burger.

So a Fillet Tower Burger with a different sauce? Why must they mock us like this, DG?

Do you guys know why KFC UK do not carry mash with gravy and biscuits?

God Damn it i need the Boxmaster TLO back right fucking now.

Maybe, like the film trilogy, Part II will be much better!

Unfortunately we don't know why KFC UK don't carry mash and the famous biscuits, I guess it is a cultural thing as British people are more used to chips with their meal. The mashI have had at KFC in other parts of the world though has been excellent so I would love to see it introduced.

I agree totally with this!

Had a Godfather meal the other night and was very unimpressed. Like someone else said, it's just a tower burger with a different sauce. I must admit the salsa I had was VERY spicy and overpowering and put me off the whole burger. I really wish they would just leave the tower burger alone, you can't better perfection so just leave it and concentrate on other new burgers!

holy crap, get a life

What would you class as "getting a life"... leaving anonymous messages to other people on the internet telling them that THEY need to get a life?! Seriously, you're my hero, I wish I was as insignificant as you!

You have to be kidding me.

This is KFC - the dirty bird. Words like 'palate' have no relevance here. Its a bit of fried chicken, shoved in a bun with some slightly different tasting sauce in it.

FoodCritic, it's a great shame if you can't appreciate the subtle range of flavours and delicate use of herbs and spices in every exquisite meal the Colonel produces. Might I suggest that you sample the Godfather Box Meal and savour every mouthful, let us know how it goes :-)

I am a cook at a branch in devon and let me tell you these are incredibly popular, in a 6 hour slot I cooked almost 200 fillets most of them being for the godfather!!

I think you're wrong DG, I'm on my second godfather since Saturday and they are delicious. I'd rate it 8/10, from the pictures it looks like you were served a bit of a dud.

Not had a chance to sample this one yet, but I can't say I'm that tempted to stray away from the Zinger Tower after your review.

Speaking of new box meals though, I'm a big fan of the Kentucky Jack, and it always disappoints me how rubbish the meal is. They should do a "Jack in a Box".

In fact, a little campaign is kicking off to let the Colonel know that we want it: http://www.facebook.com/pages/KFC-Kentucky-Jack-Box-Meal-Campaign-for-the-Jack-in-a-Box/202906559738677

Can't say I'm too enthused to stray away from the Wicked Zinger Tower meal to try this after your review. I'm always up for the Colonel trying new things though.

Speaking of which, I'm a big fan of the Kentucky Jack meal, but I'm always disappointed that they don't do a good enough meal deal for it. In fact, a little campaign is brewing for the "Jack in a Box". Would be great if you could blog it.

Big Daddy box meal all the way.

Why doe it show corn on the cob on the poster of the Godfather meal, yet you dont get one.

Hi, As a box meal you are entitled to a regular side. This doesn't have to be Corn, it could be Coleslaw, Beans but for me it has to be gravy!

Godfather burger can have a zinger fillet in it as well as a standard fillet if you like it spicy

To the person who wants a Kentucky Jack in a box, you can upgrade on a Fully Loaded for a Jack burger at the cost of a pound or something...

The God Father burger sauce is a let down but on the plus it's cheaper than towering up on a Fully Loaded. They are bringing out the grilled chicken as a healthier option burger in a few months.

I find that burger king is better.

best meal i have ever had fom kfc and im absoluteley gutted they have stopped doing it

Would just like to point out, that the godfather actually comes with a choice of either the normal chicken fillet or the zinger fillet! Just state your choice when ordering :)

Is this just like a Fully loaded meal then? Has the fully loaded been discontinued?
I had the Boneless banquet for one the other day... was a bit disappointed with it. It cost more than the fully loaded and did not fill me up.

The thing that annoys me about KFC is that they won't swap chicken on the bone for a bonesless piece in these box meals...very frustrating!

Bit harsh- it's a remarkable amount of food for £5- feeds both of my sons easily. We order the burger without mayo or sauce anyway.

Anonymous said...

its £5.19 not £4.99

Anonymous said...

Ordered one and didn't get the hash brown on the burger! Useless bunch of people!

i tried this yesterday, and i really really liked it. thought it tasted very nice! and the burger, piece of chicken, chips, side and a drink for £5 was excellent! and it tasted so nice aswell. so i think your review was a tad bit harsh, but oh well! it's only a kfc ;-)

The godfather meal is godlike end of story. Saying it's just like a tower bigger is an insult, that's like saying returning piece of chicken in the colonel's hut is the same.

4/10 ARE YOU BEING SERIOUS?!!

Is the Godfather still being sold?

paulbot said...

I'm afraid not :-(

Anonymous said...

do you think you guys will try and do a homemade version sometime?
